GI Joe started out as military-themed action figures from toy company Hasbro during the year 1964. When they first came out, there was one character representing each branch of the armed forces. Aside from the US, it was also licensed in other parts of the world, most notably in the UK where it was named Action Man. However, during the late 1960s at the height of the Vietnam War, Hasbro decided to downplay the toys’ military image and it was then renamed as “The Adventures of GI Joe”. In the 1970s, the toys were relaunched as the “Adventure Team” minus the military banner. Ever since then, the toy line kept going through changes to their image and name. The most notable was during the 1982 which gave the GI Joes the image that it has today.

At the height of its popularity during the 80s and the 90s, the GI Joe franchise expanded to more than just action figures. It eventually extended into an animated TV series and into an ongoing comic book. Together with clever marketing and its growing popularity, the line eventually branched out to more than just toys. A lot of spin-off merchandising became available which included shirts, posters, video games, board games and a whole lot more. In 1985, GI Joe became the top-selling American time during that time.

As of today, GI Joe is gaining popularity thanks to the 2009 movie “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. And with this newfound popularity, GI Joe is now being introduced to the younger generation and re-introduced to the older generation who have grown up with America’s favorite action figures.
